  • Group working is widely used in management education. It is promoted by academic staff, educational institutions, accrediting bodies and employers. The potential benefits of group working in management education are varied and important, however, our experience reveals that unless steps are taken to help the groups to develop, and these benefits are unlikely to be realized for a significant proportion of the cohort. In-deed, group working without support may undermine individual learning and adversely impact the student experience and esprit de corps of the program. This paper explores the reasons why groups in management education have difficulty working effectively (even when the students are mature and experienced in working in multi-cultural teams) and outlines the actions we have taken in an attempt to overcome these difficulties. The lessons and evolved practice are based on over 15 years of experience of group working across MSc Management, MBA and executive MBA programs, delivered in full time, part time and modular formats and based in London, Dubai and Shanghai.
